Frequently Asked Questions

How is the amount per person calculated?

Amount per person = (Bill total + Tip amount) / Number of people. Tip amount = Bill total × (tip% / 100). Example: $80 bill, 20% tip, 4 people → Tip = $16, Total = $96, Per person = $96 / 4 = $24.00. This splits the bill and tip evenly.

Should I tip before or after tax?

The traditional rule is to tip on the pre-tax subtotal. However, tipping on the total (including tax) is increasingly common and accepted. The difference is small: on a $100 bill with 10% tax, tipping 20% pre-tax = $20, tipping 20% on total = $22. This calculator uses the total bill amount you enter, so enter whichever base you prefer.

How much should I tip?

General restaurant tipping guidelines in the US: 15% for adequate service, 18% for good service, 20% for excellent service, 25% for exceptional service. In Europe, tipping is less expected — rounding up or 5-10% is common. For takeout, 10-15% is typical. For delivery, 15-20% is standard.

What if everyone ordered different amounts?

This calculator splits evenly — it divides the total bill and tip by the number of people. For unequal splits (each person pays for what they ordered), add up each person's items separately and calculate their individual tip. Alternatively, most modern bill-splitting apps like Splitwise allow itemized splitting.

Should I round up or down when splitting?

Always round up when splitting a bill. Rounding down often leaves a small shortfall that the last person or the group has to cover. If each of 4 people rounds up to the nearest dollar, the group overpays by at most $3, which goes to the server as an extra tip — a socially acceptable and practical solution.
